I Destroyed $100 in Abrasives on This "Alien" Blade [4K]

The "Unsharpenable" Blade: A Warning to Professionals

I thought I could sharpen anything until the Spyderco MT40 arrived. This isn't steel—it’s injection-molded High Impact Ceramic (HIC), and after destroying over $100 in professional diamond belts and stones, I realized the truth: you don’t sharpen HIC, you "Pressure Flake" it.

The Abrasive Tournament I put this "Alien" material through a gauntlet of my best abrasives to see what would bite. From the SG-250 Aluminum Oxide to Silicon Carbide and the final boss—Diamond and CBN. The results were shocking. While Silicon Carbide showed promise, most professional tools were simply obliterated by the density of this ceramic.

A Message to Spyderco,
@SpydercoKnivesOfficial you released this to the market asking for feedback. Here it is: Are you gatekeeping an industrial protocol for HIC? We’ve proven that standard professional sharpening doesn't work. Is there a specific abrasive or pressure-flaking sequence required, or is this truly meant to be a "disposable" edge for the end user?
Huge thank you to @Tsprof for supplying the best case tool for this experiment. Their sharpening system truly is the definition of precision, we look forward to more time trying to master the TSPROF Pioneer.

Technical Discoveries

The Angle: We settled on 22 degrees (matching/slightly exceeding the existing edge) to mitigate the unknown.
The Technique: Edge-trailing diamond passes are likely mandatory. Any edge-leading movement results in catastrophic micro-chipping.
