We are living in an apartment based on two floors. There is neither a basement nor a garage or a free room where I can do my woodworking.
Two years ago I finished turning our attic into a living zone with a big open space living room a kitchen and a small office. We moved up stairs and all the rooms of the lower floor have been turned into bed rooms. The last free room left, its the room where I build the tinywoodworkshop by the way, is now turning into a dream-sleeping room for my younger son. I knew from the beginning if I am not able to come out with some great idea of, how to continue making stuff without having a dedicated workspace, my DIY career will be over.
I desperately needed a soluten, I knew that this solution has to become something
- mobile which I can move around inside our apartment,
- it has to be very compact, kind of a folding solution, because there is not much space left for storage
- it has to be modular, and extendable, because I need as much functionality as possible
- it has to be clean, because I will have to use it inside the bedroom.
So I've ended up with this tinywoodworkshop.
- It is mobile, so i can take it wherever i want,
- it is compact once it is folded up it does not need much space any more.
- it is multifunctional and extendable, which means I can use it as a table saw, as a router table, an upside down mounted jig saw with a super flexible blade guide which works a bit like a band saw. I can use is as a sanding station and with a circular saw based simple jig I am even able to joint lumber.
- its clean, a modular dust collection above and below the table top help to keep the working-zone super clean.
I did not know, if the concept of an all-in one workstation with an integrated dust collection will ever work out inside a bed room, until I tried it out. The project, a screw-less hammock stand, was the first project I made with the tinywoodworkshop. The day before I got my second shop vac. Splitting up one shop vac is not enough. But when I made the first cuts with the table saw, I knew, that I have found my way to continue making stuff.
How I made the tinywoodworkshop?
The build happend inside the last free room of our apartment, which I am turning now into a bed room for my younger son.
In the beginning I had a very rough concept in mind of what I wanted to build. I knew that I wanted to work with various machines. The best solution which came into my mind was, having them mounted on insert plates and cutting an opening for these plates.
Once I was finished with the table top I wrapped my head around the folding mechanism and the concept, of having a mobile cart, where the folding table-top is mounted on.
Then I started to think about the dust collection underneath and above the table-top. This was the hardest part. I knew very well the mess which is created by a table saw, being used without a dust collection. I think two cuts without a dust collection inside the bed room would be enough and you gonna find dust even inside your wardrobe between your clothes. Underneath the table I created a box which can be taken completely apart and above the table top there are various types of hoods.
The final step was building all the supports and accessories. I developed my own solution for cross cutting which I call the "crosscut push bar", and I found a quite flexible way to replace feather boards, I am calling it the "bench super flex flat bar". All the accessories and insert plates with the machines are stored on a shelf unit. The shelf unit finds its place on the mobile cart with the folding table top. At the end the tinywoodworkshop is a compact unit which can easily be stored inside our old kitchen room.
I am currently going through a learning curve with this equipment - learning by doing. This is the first prototype and there are certainly still a lot of improvements to be done. One of the main concepts of the tinywoodworkshop is, having an extendable workshop, so I will extend the feature set of it. Down the line I will take care of this and I will share this amazing journey here on YouTube.
This Video is dedicated to all the amazing and ambitious people out there who like to make stuff. There is always a way, NEVER STOP THINKING!
