Ontario Premier Ford calls Whole Foods policy banning employees from wearing poppies "disgusting"
Ontario Premier Doug Ford on Friday criticized Whole Foods for instituting a policy banning Canadian employees from wearing the poppy, which is a sign of remembrance and respect for fallen soldiers, calling it "disgusting and disgraceful."
He said they would also be putting forward legislation to ban companies from preventing staff from wearing a poppy during Remembrance week.
The company has caused controversy across Canada, with members of the House of Commons unanimously condemning the ban on Friday, adopting a motion to condemn both the company and owner Jeff Bezos and demand the policy be reversed.
According to reports, an employee from an Ottawa Whole Foods location was quoted saying their supervisor compared wearing the poppy to "supporting a cause," despite it being considered non-political.
A little over an hour after Ford addressed the policy, and amid the ongoing controversy, Whole Foods reversed its policy and will allow employees to wear poppies.
