First Nations in Alberta, led by Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation, are mobilizing to oppose Alberta’s potential split from Canada and safeguard their culture and treaty rights. Chief Sheldon Sunshine describes efforts to build cultural and land-based education—summer camps, moose-harvest and fish camps, and Cree language teachings at the former St. Francis Xavier Residential School—as part of preserving a way of life tied to Treaty 8 territory. Indigenous leaders argue treaty rights are senior to provincial decisions and that Crown’s obligations to consult have been violated by allowing a citizen-led separation petition. Two judges have sided with First Nations, limiting the province’s ability to hold constitutionally binding referendum. Premier Danielle Smith calls rulings erroneous and plans to appeal. Manitoba’s Premier Wab Kinew and others have pressed Alberta to fulfill the duty to consult, not petition-gatherers. Sunshine vows opposition, while maintaining a vision of Canada’s unity and life aligned with Indigenous traditions.
