Former Conservative MP Marilyn Gladu has crossed the floor to join the Liberal caucus, giving Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government a near-majority. Gladu represents Sarnia—Lambton–Bkejwanong and is the fifth opposition MP to switch to the Liberals since last year’s election, and the fourth Conservative to cross, according to Global News. Carney announced the move on social media, calling Gladu a valuable addition with engineering and business experience. Gladu said constituents want serious leadership and an economy plan, adding the decision was to serve Canada. She told reporters Carney invited her to bring her experience to the Liberal tent and address global uncertainties from tariffs, arguing for a more resilient, self-reliant Canada.

The switch puts the Liberals at 171 seats, just one shy of a functional majority, potentially requiring the Speaker to break ties. Three byelections are set for Terrebonne, Scarborough Southwest and University—Rosedale, with Terrebonne leaning Liberal but historically tight.
