Australia left with ‘huge capability gap’ if Collin-class sub life-extension fails

ASPI military analyst Malcolm Davis says a life-of-type extension of Collins Class submarines was “critical” during a transition to nuclear submarines.

The Albanese government has been warned that the $5 billion plan to extend the life of the navy’s ageing fleet of Collins-class submarines for another decade is a perilously high-risk endeavour that is not guaranteed to succeed.

“If LOTE fails, then we are left with a huge capability gap and no easy way to fill up,” Mr Davis said.
