1962 British & World Professional Figure Skating Championships - Ice Dance Event

Here's some old school ice dance for you, courtesy of some grainy cinefilm footage I picked up on eBay. I had a lot of fun putting the music to this and trying to get the film to the correct tempo - the original plays almost in fast forward - to try and match the music selected. And I KNOW that the compulsory dances don't match up step for step but without a complete circuit of anything that would be impossible to do.

I certainly took liberties with the free dances, they would likely have skated to orchestral arrangements by 1962 but the organ music, and given that we can see Nottingham's fantastic organ featured at the end of the rink, seemed appropriate to the period.

It is another time, another world but it is glorious. Huge thanks to Heather Green who helped me identify the skaters. Heather won this title in 1963 and 1964 with her partner Robin Jones. Featured here are the winners of the ice dance, Ann Palmer & Roy Lee and the second placed couple, Betty Loach & Keith Kelley. The lady in yellow is Barbara Conniff, the winner of the ladies competition.
