Surviving Childhood Illness, Child Abuse, & Medical Trauma. Kidney Reflux Disease & Bipolar Disorder

I always felt sick as a little girl. Headaches, stomach pain, nausea. Always had to pee. It kept me up at night.
The doctors did so many tests. The machines were big and scary. I was catheterized several times. It hurt so bad.
I had kidney reflux disease (vesicoureteral reflux VUR): urine flowed backwards into my kidneys. When I was 7, I had surgery for it.
The pain & nausea didn’t stop. A neurologist at MUSC diagnosed me with migraines. Medicine made me better.
In middle school, my bipolar schizophrenic mother told the stomach doctor that I was “a hateful little bitch.”
The stomach doctor phoned a psychaitrist friend, who prescribed Prozac at the first appointment.
It was a secret. I was not to tell my father.
The pills made me lose my appetite. I lost 10lbs before threatening to tell Dad. Mom stopped giving me the pills.
Due to my mother’s abuse, I struggled with depression & self-harm. In high school, I was prescribed Paxil, which made me feel weird & jittery. Dad forced me to take it anyway.
We didn’t know back then that Paxil causes heart defects in babies, so it’s a good thing I quit taking it as soon as I turned 18. I had my first son at 19, two months before my 20th birthday.
As an adult, I suffer PTSD, OCD, migraines, & frequent UTIs. Plus social & medical anxiety, especially in hospitals.
