Ukrainian drones are turning Russian military logistics into a "road of death" in southern Ukraine

The Russian military calls this route "Novorossiya" – it is a key transport artery that runs through occupied Ukrainian territories and connects Russia's Rostov-on-Don with Melitopol, Mariupol, and Crimea along the coast of the Sea of Azov.
However, as The Guardian reports , in recent months, the Ukrainian military has renamed the R-280 highway – the "road of death." This is due to the constant presence of Ukrainian drones, which monitor the airspace over the route and hunt for Russian military convoys.
The road is of particular importance to Moscow as it is the main land corridor for supplying Russian troops in southern Ukraine, bypassing the Kerch Bridge to occupied Crimea, which remains vulnerable to attack. Since late May, civilian traffic has been virtually shut down along most of the highway. Videos are increasingly appearing online, showing not only burned-out trucks along the road but also the drone attacks themselves, the article states. This week, following a series of attacks by Ukrainian drones, traffic across the Chongar Bridge, a key section of the route between the occupied part of the Kherson region and Crimea, was suspended.
The 1st Separate Assault Regiment of the Ukrainian Armed Forces stated that Ukrainian troops are monitoring all enemy movements in the area and are monitoring repair work.
According to drone operators, particularly fighters from the 412th Nemesis Brigade, dozens of Russian trucks and fuel trucks have already been destroyed as part of the so-called "medium strikes" campaign.
The goal of this campaign is to destroy enemy targets at a distance of 20 to 200 kilometers from the front line, primarily logistics centers, transport routes and supply systems.
As The Guardian notes, in May, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that the number of such strikes had quadrupled compared to February: "There are now twice as many strikes at a distance of more than 20 kilometers as in March, and four times as many as in February. And there will be more. This is one of the priorities."
A few weeks later, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation Mikhail Fyodorov clarified that the strategic goal was to create a complete "logistics blockade" for the Russian army. He stated that the most effective units were receiving additional funding and drones to accomplish this task. "The results of the new tactics are already becoming noticeable. Unmanned Systems Force Commander Robert Brovdy reported that over the past two weeks, military traffic along the R-280 route has decreased by 71%," the article states. As noted, Ukrainian units are not disclosing all the details of their new operational methods, but experts estimate that the massive use of drone groups to attack roads, railways, and bridges plays a key role.
American Hornet drones, equipped with artificial intelligence systems to detect vehicles, are reportedly being actively used in such operations.
These drones, with a wingspan roughly the size of a large surfboard, can operate at a range of up to 150 kilometers and patrol Russian military supply routes almost continuously.
One of the consequences of the campaign has already been a fuel shortage in occupied Crimea.
In addition, the Ukrainian military is likely using a new domestically produced Morrigan aircraft-type unmanned aerial vehicle, which is approximately two meters long.
Its unique feature is the ability to be launched from a special catapult or rail installation without the need for a runway.
At the same time, Russian officials are reporting that Ukraine is using remote-controlled aerial mining. For example, the Kremlin-appointed head of the occupied Zaporizhzhia region, Yevhen Balitsky, reported the operation of a "comprehensive remote-controlled mining system" that responds to traffic movements. He even urged drivers to refrain from traveling unless absolutely necessary. As a result, the charred remains of Russian trucks are increasingly visible along the roads, while convoys try to travel along secondary routes to avoid detection.
