Drew Krasner - Begin To Live (Apartment Sessions)

I wrote Begin to Live at the end of my senior year of high school, filled with a sweeping, naive optimism and a simple view of how very large problems might come to be fixed—with a cascading storm of music and kindness and compassion, all rained down over and over and over and over upon a resilient clay humanity. As I have grown up, this boundless optimism has tempered and transformed, but its original impetus has not disappeared: an unshakable feeling that 1) compassionate community can and must be reclaimed as the cornerstone of human life and 2) art is the most potent vehicle with which to assemble these vast communities. Never before have I been so affirmed in this feeling as during those ten days in Iceland with Apartment Sessions family. Hearing this ad hoc village of 40 beautiful souls singing this song breathed new meanings into it for me, dissolving time into a million invisible shards of past, present, and future around us. I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to revisit this song 8 years later in this sacred place with these special people. Thank you to everyone who made this ambitious project possible—and to Luke, Liz, and Evan, for your courage to craft dreams together in this waking world, for remarrying art and community, for trying something New over and over and over again. - Drew

This video exists in many parts because of the Creativity and Love brought into many rooms and spaces and landscapes by many people, an energy that has coalesced over many years and harbors the echoes of past, present and future collaborators and loved ones. This song that Drew wrote in high school has bounced through my brain every day since we first sang it together. I am elated to share what has, for me, been a tremendous source of power. I don’t think anyone was really prepared for the magical feeling that we experienced living at Skalinn Gljastein for ten days. There was an intense honesty in our hearts and in our instruments. Thank you to every person who came along with us and thank you to the hundreds of people who supported us financially and emotionally. And thank you to Liz, Luke and Drew for dreaming big and then living in that dream together, through the trials and tribulations, for over a year now.
