UBOS Unveils Uganda’s First Aquaculture Census, Report Highlights Fish Farming Potential as Key Income Source for Ugandans

Uganda Bureau of Statistics released Uganda’s first-ever Aquaculture Census Report, the first of its kind on the African continent, highlighting the growing potential of fish farming as a source of income.
Launched at Statistics House in Kampala, the report shows that Uganda has 9,463 aquaculture farms, with 6,408 located in rural areas. The Buganda sub-region recorded the highest number at 1,270 farms, contributing to 65,444 metric tonnes of production between July 2024 and June 2025. Officiating at the launch, State Minister for Finance and Planning, Amos Lugoloobi said the findings demonstrate aquaculture’s potential to drive sustainable incomes if challenges such as access to affordable fish feed are addressed. The report provides insights into the structure of the aquaculture sector in Uganda, including farming methods, distribution patterns, stock, production, and extension services among other variables. The data generated in the report will support planning in the Aquaculture sub-sector as the country progresses towards ensuring food security, income generation, and value addition for agricultural products.
