Kamal Haasan gifts skill centre, unveils father’s statue at his hometown

Madurai: Actor and Makkal Needhi Maiyam founder Kamal Haasan celebrated his 65th birthday at Paramakudi in Ramanathapuram, his hometown, by unveiling a statue of his late father and dedicating a skill development centre to the people of the town.

His family members, including brother Charuhaasan, daughters Shruthi, Akshara and niece Suhashini, actor Prabu were among others who participated in the grand function. Speaking on the occasion, he said this was the happiest birthday in his life after his fifth, which was then organised by his sister-in-law. He recalled how his father always had a vision for him and mentored him throughout his life. “He wanted me to study for IAS and when I told him that I preferred to be an artist he was slightly disappointed but asked me to at least study music. The humour and anger for a cause were all qualities I inherited from him,’’ he said. He said people like his father were good role models.

“Only one person in my family wanted me to enter politics, a move opposed by my other family members. I told him that he had been in politics due to the freedom struggle but what was the need for me to join politics. He said that the time may come. Now I realise that the time for another struggle has come, and I have fulfilled his wish,’’ he said.

The actor-politician said that about 61 lakh children enrol for primary education in the state every year. This came down to 58 lakh in middle school . “What about those who don’t go for higher education? The skill development centre that my family is giving as a gift to Paramakudi will help them to be equipped with skills,” he said.
