Why Steve Jobs Drowned The First iPod! | The Ultimate Design Masterclass

In 2001, Apple’s engineering team poured months of grueling effort into developing the very first iPod prototype. Confident in their achievement, they presented it to Steve Jobs, claiming it was physically impossible to make the music player any smaller or thinner. Instead of arguing, Jobs picked up the expensive device, walked over to an aquarium in his office, and dropped it straight into the water.

As the prototype sank, air bubbles began floating to the surface. Jobs pointed to the bubbles and told the stunned engineers that trapped air meant there was still empty space inside. He ordered them back to the lab to make it even more compact. This uncompromising, ruthless attitude toward design forced the team to rethink their engineering limits, ultimately giving the world one of the most iconic, pocket-sized consumer tech products in human history.
