An appendix ultrasound is a medical imaging test used to evaluate the appendix, typically to check for appendicitis (inflammation of the appendix). It is a non-invasive, radiation-free procedure that uses sound waves to create images of the appendix.
Why is an appendix ultrasound done?
• Diagnose appendicitis (the most common reason)
• Rule out other causes of abdominal pain
• Assess possible abscesses or perforations
• Evaluate conditions mimicking appendicitis (e.g., ovarian cysts, mesenteric lymphadenitis)
Procedure:
1. Preparation:
• Patients may be asked to fast for several hours before the exam to reduce bowel gas, which can obstruct the view.
• A full bladder may be required in some cases for better visualization.
2. Scanning Process:
• A gel is applied to the lower right abdomen.
• A transducer (a handheld probe) is moved over the area to send and receive sound waves.
• The graded compression technique is used, where gentle pressure is applied to displace bowel gas and visualize the appendix.
3. Normal vs. Abnormal Findings:
• Normal appendix: Thin, compressible, non-enlarged less than 6 mm in diameter.
• Appendicitis: Enlarged more than 6 mm, non-compressible, thickened wall, increased blood flow, and possible fluid collection.
Advantages of an Appendix Ultrasound:
• Safe no radiation, unlike CT scans
• Quick usually takes 15–30 minutes
• Cost-effective
• Good for children and pregnant women, who should avoid radiation-based imaging
Limitations:
• May be inconclusive if bowel gas obstructs visibility.
• Less effective in overweight patients due to deeper abdominal fat layers.
• Sometimes, a CT scan or MRI may be needed for a more definitive diagnosis.
