Lecture 23: Experimental Evaluation of Parameters of a DC Machine

This lecture discusses procedures for estimating the parameters of a DC machine through experiments. The armature and field winding resistances can be obtained through DC resistance tests. The inductance values can be determined either by measuring the time constant after applying a voltage pulse or by measuring the phase delay while exciting the winding using an AC voltage source.
The back-EMF coefficient is obtained by measuring the induced EMF for different field currents while the motor is driven at a constant speed by a prime mover.
The friction coefficient can be obtained through no-load tests at multiple speeds. The polar moment of inertia of the rotor can be determined either through a retardation test, by suddenly disconnecting the supply while the motor is running at a constant speed, or through an acceleration test by applying a torque pulse.
