Personal Atlantic - Geoff Holt becomes first Quadriplegic to sail single handed across the Atlantic.

Hoping to raise awareness for both Geoff Holt's chosen cause the Ellen MacArthur Trust, and this channel's chosen charity the RAF Benevolent Fund, Battle of Britain TV compared Geoff's achievements to those of Group Captain Douglas Bader..............

Douglas Bader

On December 14th, 1931 in the aptly named Bristol Bulldog plane, Bader was involved in an horrific crash which surely spelled the end of his flying career. Bader took the plane so low that the left wing clipped the grass and the plane crashed. Bader suffered severe lower body injuries and he had his legs amputated one above the knee and the other below the knee. Yet, less than 9 years later, after mastering use of artificial limbs Bader was back in the cockpit, flying Spitfires and Hurricanes, and played a large role in the Battle of Britain. Few would argue he became one of the best known fighter Aces, his fame and (notoriety!) spread throughout both Allied and German forces and civilian populations. From his wartime record, and continued successes in peacetime, Bader was undoubtedly a strong role model for triumph over adversity.

Geoff Holt
When the father-of-one was last on the beach in Tortola, British Virgin Islands, it was 1984 and he was a fit 18-year-old.
But his life was to change forever following a diving accident, which left him confined to a wheelchair and paralysed from the chest down.
More than two decades later, Mr Holt has made an "emotional" return to Cane Garden Bay on the island, where the accident happened.
In 2006 he became the first wheelchair user to gain a powerboat licence and in 2007 he became the first quadriplegic sailor to sail around Britain.
Mr Holt sailed the 60ft (18m) wheelchair-accessible catamaran Impossible Dream alone. Geoff was joined by a cameraman and Ships Doctor, Susana. It is hoped the crossing will raise money and awareness for the Ellen Macarthur Trust

The 3,000-mile journey took him up to a month to complete, across some hostile waters, but has made Geoff the first quadriplegic yachtsman to make the voyage unassisted in every aspect of the sailing.
