I'm only going to recommend brands I have used. The best IMO are:
Bowers & Wilkins. (B&W)
KEF. (best bargain)
Paradigm.
Other good options at a lower price:
Polk
Pinncale
Kliptch
Search for "speakers" on craigslist and sort by most expensive to
lower. Don't start at the bottom up. Research ones close to your budget
then haggle, offer trades etc.
Regarding receivers/amps: You can find DIRT CHEAP
great sounding receivers locally because non
HDMI ones are obsolete/cheap but we only
need stereo.
Look out for old Marantz, Onkyo,Sony, Phillips,
Sansui etc which will WAY outperform
$500 powered studio monitors coupled with good speakers.
