Shockwave Therapy for Pain on the Ball of the Foot | Seattle Podiatrist
https://www.footankle.com/pain-balls-feet/metatarsalgia/ Shockwave therapy can help treat ball of foot pain (metatarsalgia) by stimulating healing of non healing tissue. Shockwave is non-invasive and has no side effects. It is thought to work in a couple ways.
1) Neo-vascularisation: Shockwave therapy helps create new blood vessels locally. The improved blood flow helps tissue heal.
2) Release of growth factors: Growth factors are proteins that stimulate the cells that repair tissue
Shockwave has numerous high level studies that demonstrate it’s effectiveness in helping to heal ligamentous tissue such as the metatarsal joint capsule. It has has been shown to provide very good outcomes in many other orthopedic conditions such as tendinitis, plantar fasciitis, lateral epicondilitis and rotator cuff disease.
While shockwave has been shown to work well to treat similar tissues, right now the down-side to shockwave therapy for ball of foot pain is that there are not any high level studies specifically on metatarsalgia.
