Meet the Inverts - The Mayfly
The Mayfly: King for a day
Mayflies belong to the ancient insect order Ephemeroptera. The name is derived from the Greek ‘ephemera’ which means short lived and ‘ptera’ meaning wing. This is certainly true of the adults who live only for a short time to find a mate before dying but is a bit of a misnomer as mayfly nymphs can live for months to years in our rivers and streams.
In the first of our short films shot by aquatic ecologist Iain Reid in lockdown, we meet some of the mayfly nymphs you can find around the Forth.
