How to Paint the Ocean in Watercolour

This is a pretty long video. This painting shows you how to paint the ocean in watercolour. It is a commission and taken from a view from Cronulla, Sydney looking towards Cape Solander where you can view humpback whales in winter.

This painting was painted on half a sheet (28cm x 76cm) of Rives BFK etching paper.

I used my normal 2 inch hake brush, another two inch hake brush, pure kolinsky round sable size 12 and a very small series 7 winsor and newton round sable (very small), rigger brush, 3M magic removable tape, hair dryer and a flat nylon brush! I think that's about it. Oh yes and the 4 inch hake brush to wet the sky before the second layer.

The colours used were: winsor yellow, cadmium yellow, cerulean blue, cobalt blue and cerulean blue mix, yellow ocher, raw umber, mix of raw umber and cobalt blue, mix of cobalt blue and burnt umber, mix of winsor blue (red shade) and light red. I think that's about it!

Rives BFK etching paper. Probably best to source this from your local store so you can look after the paper and not have it posted unless you are buying a large amount of paper and it will be looked after. There is nothing worse than getting hundreds of sheets all with a indent in them. Having said that you can actually source this paper from amazon:
