Motivation, Dopamine, & ADHD: why it's hard to get motivated & 6 techniques to help with motivation

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that is responsible for many things in our brains: emotional regulation, time management, and motivation, to name a few. People with ADHD have a dopamine deficiency/dysregulation, meaning that they don't produce, transport, or process the normal amount of dopamine. This makes them forgetful, moody, inappropriate at times, and easily distractible. Not to mention, they're HUGE procrastinators.

While it may look like we're lazy to neurotypicals, it's REALLY not our fault. Trust me, we WANT to get the things done, it's just really hard for us to get motivated because of our faulty brain chemistry. In this video, I talk more about the science behind why it's difficult for us to get motivated. I also include six tips/hacks to help you get motivated and explain why they work. There's also a tip in there about how to get your children motivated if you're a parent with a neurodiverse child.

If you use a different technique that I didn't mention in the video, please leave a comment telling us what works for you!

(As always, I would like to note that I am not a medical doctor, nurse, pharmacist, counselor, psychologist, psychiatrist, therapist, or anything fancy like that. I am also not an ADHD/life coach. I'm just a person with combined-type ADHD and I have a passion for research and teaching. I like to find information and share it here with you with the hopes that it makes information fun and more accessible.)
