Blackland Blackbird Brass Safety Razor | The Daily Shave

Matt here with another Daily Shave video. Today I am going to do a DE shave and razor review.

The Razor: Blackland Blackbird Brass. This is the shorter handle (85mm) version, closed comb, machined finish blackbird. The brass version is heftier than the steel. It’s about 10% heavier and weighs in at 103.5g. The machined finish gives the razor some character, and I like the look of the striations left behind. The brass will oxidize and patina over time giving an antiqued look. To keep my brass razors looking shiny, I scrub with a very soft toothbrush and mild detergent. I love this unique and striking design. The handle has this sharp fluting that is very grippy, and it screws into a recess in the baseplate for a tight fit. The razor bends the blade quite a bit which removes some of the flex from the blade, and holds it tightly without any chatter. The topcap posts are long and are set deep in the baseplate, which has wide lather channels that run the length of the baseplate. The topcap covers most of the blade tabs. The angular topcap acts as a guide for the perfect angle for shaving. The shave is the same as the steel version to me. It gives a very aggressive (efficient) shave that feels mild when you maintain the angle. For reference, compared to other artisan razors I have tried, the Blackbird is more efficient than the Charcoal Goods level 2, the Timeless .95 titanium, and the Karve CB on plate E.

The Soap:
Wholly Kaw King of Bourbon. This is Sri’s new buffalo milk soap that also contains donkey milk, and is a tallow and lanolin based soap. This soap is a strong 7/10 scent strength vanilla and tobacco scent, with additional supporting notes. The tobacco is a green twangy cigar type tobacco, not a smokey, ashy one. The base is among my favorite of the new bases I have tried this year. It is a bit easier to lather and more voluminous than the already excellent tallow and donkey milk base. There is a beautiful sheen and slickness to this soap. But for me the outstanding quality is the fatty moisturizing face feel and post shave. The matching alcohol free toner aftershave is a bit more vanillic than the soap. It leaves the skin nicely moisturized and has no tackiness or burn. Its one of the very best aftershaves I have used to date. The scent very long lasting and I get about 8 hours performance on my skin.
The Brush:
West Coast Shaving Two Tone brush with 26mm Boss type knot. This brush is dense and soft, with a high loft, which makes it easy to splay and gives huge coverage. I love the 1950’s vintage design.
