In the past, this ancient settlement was given the status of
royal city and market town.
However, even today, Peebles is considered one of the most successful and independent retail centre in Scotland. This is a most surprising city in the UK as itboasts a high number of shops and the highest level of service in them!

The road to the west of the city leads to Neidpad Castle. It is useless to look for some obvious meaning in the name "Neidpath". This is the name given to the castle by its first owner. The fortress was erected between 1263 and 1266 - no one knows the exact date.
