Mount Hotham - Roothy, Alan Gray and Big Steve Robson

Our guys get to do stuff on a daily basis that only the most experienced off-roaders would attempt and the result is they learn quickly - or walk home. And talking about quick learning, Steve ‘the Golden Boy’ Robson was along for this trip in the mighty blue bomber Hilux towing the GIC Extreme Ranger again - the same trailer we’ve dragged from one end of the world to the other already!
Steve was an off-road virgin only a couple of years ago but when his boss told him he’d be towing their trailers on trips he jumped at the chance. Now, having pulled off some awesome manouvres, plucked some incredible recoveries and ducked more danger than Daffy the Deadly Duck, Stevo’s an absolute gun behind the wheel. Like most really good drivers he plays his skills down, asking for advice and comments even when you know he’s already mentally scaled that hill and relaxed with a Turkey on top. Steve’s early experienced with us have seen him arm the Hilux to take it too - it’s running bigger rubber and lockers both ends these days!
Did someone say ‘no fear’? Oh look, it’s Alan Gray from Terrain Tamer! Now Alan and his brother used to race speedway bikes back in the - oh, lets be conservative and say the 1920’s - as a business so don’t expect a couple of hundred years since then to have made him any more sensible! Al’s also the world’s most experienced four wheel drive mechanic and one of my favourite people on earth. As far as driving experience anyone who can negotiate the High Country on the back wheel of a Honda Gold Wing should be expected to chuck a V8 Shorty 40 at anything less angled than a tree. And he did.
Our plan for this trip after meeting up at the van park in Wonnangatta was to travel east towards the Blue Rag Trig Point. Now a quick look at the map puts that down to a hugely massive twenty kilometres or so, about the distance I can sprint when the Handbrake picks up a frozen mullet. But that’s the map, the reality is some of the most adventurous tracks in the High Country and with Alan leading the way, well, we knew there was a chance of getting lost in space forever anyway...
