RIP Dr Frederick S. Humphries of Florida A and M University
The photo in this thumbnail was taken in 1995 during my graduation ceremony at Florida A&M University (FAMU) in Tallahassee, Florida where I graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Computer Information Systems. I was fortunate enough to have been influenced by Dr. Frederick S. Humphries who served as the 8th president of FAMU.
On June 24th I received an email from the FAMU National Alumni Association informing me that President Humphries passed away that day at the age of 85. Like so many others who had the privilege of attending FAMU under the tenure of President Frederick S. Humphries, I owe a lot of my achievements to Dr. Humphries. Dr. Humphries made us feel like we could achieve anything and many of us indeed went on to make some extraordinary achievements.
Dr. Humphries, who brought the motto "Excellence With Caring" to FAMU was a larger than life figure who grew the student body of FAMU over 100% during his tenure and helped the university to become the Time Magazine Princeton Review College of the Year in 1997 beating out Harvard and Yale to recruit the top black scholars in the nation.
I've been fortunate to have some very good role models in my life and Dr. Humphries was one of them. After my successful internship with Microsoft and helping to pave the way for other FAMU students to work there, he would often refer to me as his Microsoft man.
I'm reminded of the old spiritual that goes "May the works I've done speak for me. When I'm resting in my grave, there is nothing more to be said. May the works I've done, let it speak for me." Well Dr. Humphries can rest peacefully, knowing that he has left behind a great legacy and the work that he has done is crystal clear. For he was a shining example of great leadership and the university, the students and the faculty all flourished because of his excellence with caring.
My condolences to the family and may his soul rest in peace. Thank you for challenging us to be better.
