#12 Tutorial/Hand Painted Silk/Painting Rhododendron Design
Hi Everyone!
Welcome to my YouTube Channel Karla Kay Art. I am an artist from Arlington, WA. USA that specializes in hand painted silk. This channel is all about my artwork.
This demonstration is of a hand painted silk piece in progress. It demonstrates the application of silk dyes on 19mm silk charmeuse.
I am currently using Tinfix dyes however Tinfix dyes are being discontinued (They are a Sennelier product). So, I am looking for a replacement dye. I am looking at Jacquard Red Label and Dupont. I have not decided which to use yet and have bought trial colors for each. In this video I have run out of Turquoise Blue Tinfix (Azure Blue) and am trying out Dupont Turquoise in its place. Note that since I use a limited palette (I only buy Turqoise, Fuschia, Yellow & Black and mix all my other colors from those colors) when I say I am now trying out Dupont Turquoise Blue I mean that my blues, greens, purples all have the new Dupont Turquoise Blue mixed into them. I have been assured by folks at Dharma Trading Co. that both Jacquard Red Label and Dupont play nice with Tinfix and that they will all blend and steam set ok.
Thank you for your interest in my artwork!
Enjoy!
Silk used: 19mm Silk Charmeuse (Crepe back satin). Yardage was cut to desired size. In this case 36" square.
Resist used: Jacquard permanent resist in black.
Gutta Thinner used: Gutta Resist Solvent (I have been told that this is White Gasoline but I am not 100% sure of this).
Dyes used: Tinfix for all colors except turquoise blue which is Dupont. Tinfix has been discontinued so I am looking for a new dye to use. I am primarily looking at Dupont but am also considering Jacquard Red Label. Both Dupont and Jacquard red label "play nice" with Tinfix and will blend with these colors and will steam set together successfully producing colorfast silk pieces that can be hand-washed or dry-cleaned.
I used well water (no chemicals) to dilute the dyes. If you are on city water you will want to used distilled water to avoid any chemical additives.
Brushes used: Grumbacher Water Color Paintbrushes in size 12 round size 4 round and size 4 liner.
The silk, dyes and resists for this piece were all purchased from Dharma Trading Co. out of California USA.
Note: It is not recommended that you dry clean items that contain permanent black resist as the black color in the black resist can be reduced to silver/gray with dry-cleaning. Sometimes this silver gray color is appreciated (even desired) however sometimes it is not.
