#11 How To/Free handing a drawing onto silk with resist/Hand painted silk/Rhododendron design
Hi Everyone!
Welcome to my YouTube Channel Karla Kay Art. I am an artist from Arlington, WA. USA that specializes in hand painted silk. This channel is all about my artwork.
This demonstration is of a hand painted silk piece in progress. It demonstrates the application of permanent (black) resist, drawn free hand on silk, utilizing a separate pencil & paper drafted design.
It is important that when you are using permanent resist that you thin it with resist thinner so that the consistency of the resist is thin enough to coat through the fabric but not so thick that it leaves a bead or thick line above the surface of the silk. It should flow freely out of the resist applicator.
I really like the way this free hand design came out. I prefer this method over tracing a pencil image on the silk and then applying resist over the pencil line. However not all designs can be done with this method.
Thank you for your interest in my artwork!
Enjoy!
Silk used: 19mm Silk Charmeuse (Crepe back satin). Yardage was cut to desired size. In this case 36" square.
Resist used: Jacquard permanent resist in black.
Gutta Thinner used: Gutta Resist Solvent (I have been told that this is White Gasoline but I am not 100% sure of this).
Dyes to be used (in next video): Tinfix for all colors except turquoise blue which is Dupont. Tinfix has been discontinued so I am looking for a new dye to use. I am primarily looking at Dupont but am also considering Jacquard Red Label. Both Dupont and Jacquard red label "play nice" with Tinfix and will blend with these colors and will steam set together successfully producing colorfast silk pieces that can be hand-washed or dry-cleaned.
Note: It is not recommended that you dry clean items that contain permanent black resist as the black color in the black resist can be reduced to silver/gray with dry-cleaning. Sometimes this silver gray color is appreciated (even desired) however sometimes it is not.
