Written, arranged and produced by Robert Caruso.
This song was originally written for Nico (1938-1988) in 1986/87, after Robert Caruso and Nico met in London in 1985. They both lived in Brixton, and the just-turned-20 Caruso - a Nico fan, before meeting her - was not too enthusiastic about the electronic/synthesizer music of Nico's then latest album Camera Obscura (1985) and thought of writing songs for and with Nico, to be performed with a Rock band and Nico singing and playing her harmonium, as on albums like The Marble Index (1969) Desertshore (1970) and The End (1974), which had all featured John Cale either as producer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist. Caruso had in mind a different vision, darker and rockier; edgier but along the lines of Nico's album Drama Of Exile (1982) recorded with a 'New Wave' band, which had great covers of The Velvet Underground's I'm Waiting For The Man and David Bowie's Heroes, but too little of Nico's harmonium in Caruso's view. In 1987 Robert Caruso recorded a demo of Boulevard Of Broken Dreams for Nico; unfortunately she passed away in a road accident in Ibiza in the Summer of 1988, before she could record the song herself. The original demo was later included on a Robert Caruso album which collects the recordings of his 1980s band - when Caruso was still a teenager - called Rob Leer & The Electric Kids (1989).
Finally, 25 years after writing this song, Robert decided to record Boulevard Of Broken Dreams in loving memory of Nico.
This video clip features 1960s footage of Nico filmed by Andy Warhol.
BOULEVARD OF BROKEN DREAMS

In winter,
When everything was cold,
I've been sheltered,
With her back home.
I was young,
She was my friend,
But I should have known better
That everything ends.

And the things you're saying,
Sound OK to me,
'Cause we both have been
To the boulevard of broken dreams.

I was your hero,
Blue boy lost,
With a cigarette hanging from my mouth,
Wrapped in my coat.
And when you'll leave,
You'll be a hero too,
Here with me,
In the deepest blue.

Because where you're walking,
I've already been,
It's the same street of mine,
It's the boulevard of broken dreams.

I called you all,
'Cause I believe in friends,
And now I see
That you believed in me.
And it's nice to be here
After we died,
It's nice to be here
Somehow still alive.

And if you call my name,
I'll call yours,
And I'll set you free
From the boulevard of broken dreams.
