How to Replace the Friction Pack on the RS800 CVT Transmission

The next repair that we’re going to do is to replace the friction pack. This is on a fender-shifted unit with either a loss of neutral or loss of drive. To replace the friction pack, we must remove the driven kit and the drive kit – and we refer to other videos for those repairs (remove the driven kit -- https://youtu.be/i5ezGhkOdWw and remove the driver kit -- https://youtu.be/qhwhnjR_S-Y ). We’ve now removed the driven kit and the drive kit so now we’re going to remove the top cover, C-clips, shift arm and the friction pack. We remove all of the screws. We remove the C-clip, shift arm and the cover. There are 4 screws holding the friction pack. The best way to reach the one under the cam is to simply rotate this out of the way to get access. To get access to the bolt, we must remove the spring. You’ve got to rotate the cam. Then the friction pack comes off. The new friction pack is shipped with the pin. Training Bulletin TB71-59 will explain the removal of the pin (TB71-59 instructs you to set control lever in Neutral and connect the control arm to the transaxle – YOU MUST REMOVE THE SHIPPING PIN IMMEDIATELY AFTER ATTACHING THE CONTROL ARM – DON’T LEAVE THE SHIPPING PIN IN PLACE OR YOU WILL DAMAGE PARTS). At this time, we reinstall the friction pack. Tighten the screws. Reassembly starts with the cam holding the selector. It slides into place. Then reset the spring. The measurement between the spring must be 2.5 inches. The next step is the cover. Tightening torque should be 2.5 ft-lbs. Reattach the shift lever. Install the C-clip. Remove the pin. We have now reinstalled the drive kit and the driven kit.
