Having recently replaced my upper oil pan gasket and both my valve cover gaskets just two months ago, with no leaks showing, I was really surprised to see a small oil puddle under my Jeep again, near the driver’s side tire. In this video I explain what I ruled out to eventually zero in on the lower intake manifold gasket.

Note that in the video I say that the streaks on the motor that I was seeing was oil – it turns out it was really oil combined with coolant since both were leaking from the gasket. The oil-infused coolant, once it dried, left those brownish trails or streaks.

My troubleshooting first ruled out leaking oil from the oil pan gasket and valve covers.

Then I realized oil drops had formed on a place I’d never seen them before – on the bottom of the driver’s side motor mount.

This led me to see that there were brown streaks on the side of the motor (dried oil + coolant).

I followed those up into the engine compartment and realized it was a leaking fluid in a crevice you can barely see between the a/c compressor and the alternator. Having fluid there is really confusing until you realize that if it WAS the lower manifold gasket, it would leak out (towards the front of the Jeep) and then gravity would pull it down into that crevice.

Shooting a light into the gap under the thermostat revealed the glint of liquid. I then realized my coolant tank level had dropped over time. Since coolant and oil both flow through that gasket, it seemed to make sense that it might be the gasket.

I took the Jeep to the local Jeep shop (shout out to Jeep Slop Shop – www.jeepslopshop.com) and they came to the same conclusion. About a week after replacing the gasket, no more drips and the front of the engine is dry.

Hopefully this helps troubleshoot a cause of weird oil drips or help people confirm that their lower intake manifold gasket might be leaking.
