Effect of Propagation Delay on Asynchronous Counter (Ripple Counter) Explained
This video explains the limitations of the Asynchronous Counter (Ripple Counter). By watching this video, you will learn that why Asynchronous counters are not used in very high speed applications.
The following topics are covered in the video:
0:00 Introduction
0:50 Effect of Propagation delay on Ripple Counter output (Decoding Error and Skipping of Count)
10:30 Strobing Technique
12:27 Solved Examples
Other useful videos related to Counters:

Limitations of Ripple Counter:
Because of the propagation delay of flip-flops, the output of the each flip-flop in the counter is not available immediately after the rising or falling edge.
If the counter has n stages of flip-flop then total propagation delay of the ripple counter = n x tpd
And because of this propagation delay, there will be decoding error while decoding the output of the count. (There will be transient states of the counter before we get the desired output state)
Moreover, if the overall propagation delay of the counter (n x tpd) is more than the clock duration, then there will be skipping of the count.
In this video, the condition for maximum allowable clock frequency for the ripple counter has been calculated and the strobing technique to avoid the decoding error is also explained. And based on that couple of solved examples have been covered.
This video will be helpful to all the students of science and engineering in understanding the Limitations of Asynchronous Counter (Ripple Counter)
