BobBlast 345 - "Create a Loving Message"
BobBlast #345
Create a Loving Message
Welcome Back to Another BobBlast
My earliest art assignment was in 6th grade, making a Valentine card for my mother. I have made one every year since - and the annual project expanded to my family and friends. Now I paint images of Hot Air Balloons in the shape of hearts. It's a corny idea, but it keeps me busy in the studio. I find I do best when I have a project!
This BobBlast invites you to paint some dynamic, light-hearted paintings, instead of falling into the usual, mediocre, common approach to painting another Valentine heart. Even with my heart paintings, I have a tendency to paint quickly - working on several at the same time. If I feel like I am tickling a particular painting, I start another!
How I Start: I make a loose, abstract mess over the entire surface, then I let it dry. For materials, I prefer Holbein Artist Acrylic Paints because of their full body smoothness and rich colors. Also, I paint on 300 lb Kilimanjaro watercolor paper from Cheap Joe's Art Stuff. (That should answer many of your questions…)
Next Step: I paint the negative space around a Valentine Heart shape with a 2 inch wide brush, leaving the suggestion of a loose landscape at the bottom.
But wait! There's more! To give my Heart Air Balloon painting a bit more specialness, I add metallic. In the demo you can watch me use Holbein's Silver Gesso (yes, that's right - Silver Gesso). In a previous BobBlast, I experimented with gold gesso (BobBlast Issue 341) - In this BobBlast, I mix the silver gesso with my favorite acrylics and also use it as the base color gesso for my acrylic paints to sit on! I'm constantly expanding and feeding my curiosity with color and metallic gesso.
Thanks for watching and go make a Valentine card for the one you love!
