Η Ρώμη αναφέρεται συχνά ως η πόλη των επτά λόφωνλόγω της γεωγραφικής της θέσης, αλλά και ως «Αιώνια Πόλη». Η Ρώμη θεωρείται γενικά ότι είναι το «λίκνο του δυτικού χριστιανικού πολιτισμού και πολιτισμού », και το κέντρο της Καθολικής Εκκλησίας .
