Monemvasia

Monemvasia, known to the Franks as Malvasia, is a small historic town in the eastern Peloponnese, in the Municipality of Monemvasia, in the Prefecture of Laconia. It is better known from the medieval fortress, on the homonymous "Rock of Monemvasia", which is literally a small islet connected by a bridge in a forming neck with a total length of 400 meters to the current beach and city on the Laconian coast. From a geophysical point of view, it is a tombolo. The surviving buildings and structures in the castle include defensive structures of the outer castle and several small Byzantine churches.

Her name is a compound word, derived from the two Greek words Moni and Embasis. Many of the streets are narrow and only suitable for pedestrians. The bay of Palaia Monemvasia is in the North. Monemvasia is nicknamed the "Gibraltar of the East" because it happens to be miniature identical to the Rock of Gibraltar.

Entering the city, the main road with the Byzantine cobblestones leads to the Central Square with the old cannon and the Church of Elkomenos Christos.

The poet Yiannis Ritsos came from Monemvasia, where his tomb is today.
