In most cases, to diagnose sciatica, doctors start by reviewing the patient's medical history and performing a physical examination.
A common sciatica diagnostic test, performed by a doctor, is called the Lasègue test. The doctor lifts a patient's straight leg and if pain in the leg occurs between 30 to 70 degrees of elevation, the test is considered positive.
Imaging tests like computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging can help to establish the underlying cause of sciatica, such as disc herniation.
Most cases of sciatica resolve spontaneously over the course of a few weeks to months.
Over-the-counter medications such as naproxen and ibuprofen often help control the pain of sciatica, as well as help reduce inflammation.
After the most severe sciatica pain starts to decrease, physical therapy may be recommended. Exercises for your back and abdominal muscles improve your back support, and sciatica stretches can help you return to your activities.
Steroid injections are sometimes used directly into the area surrounding the affected nerve roots to decrease pain and inflammation.
Surgery is only recommended if pain is increasing or not improving, despite other treatments.
