4680 Tesla Battery VS China's New Battery Breakthrough

How good is the new Tesla 4680 battery compared to the new Chinese CATL breakthrough battery? Well, Tesla partnered up with Contemporary Amperex Technology CATL in the year 2019 for the batteries of its electric cars in China. This venture of Tesla in China in collaboration with CATL has been very successful and they are trying to keep up with the ever growing demand for Tesla cars. Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) has recently announced and revealed the world’s first ever sodium-ion battery for vehicles. CATL is one of the main suppliers of engines of Tesla and other Electric Vehicle companies and a major one of Tesla China from where Tesla China gets most of their engines. Before the unveiling of sodium-ion batteries, lithium-ion batteries were used. In fact, lithium-ion batteries are still in use by most engine and battery making companies as the makers have only yet discovered that sodium-ion batteries can be a better option. The problem with lithium-ion batteries is the cost. The metals used in such batteries are expensive. With the passing years as everything is getting expensive, the prices of metals that are used in lithium ion batteries like cobalt and nickel are also mounting. To cut these increasing costs which are ultimately increasing the prices of vehicles, makers have thought of the use of sodium ion batteries as this new battery will use raw materials that are relatively cheaper. This battery will allow the Electric Vehicles EVs to use cobalt as the main material in their batteries which is different from what was being done previously. The chairman and founder of CATL, Robin Zeng says that the sodium ion batteries have a lot of advantages over the lithium ion phosphate batteries despite sodium ion batteries having lower power levels.
