There are many who would love to believe that Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, lives in his own fantasy world where driverless cars zip around ferrying people and cars also fly from the sky. The problem is Elon Musk’s world is always very real and what he envisions sooner or later becomes a reality. As fantastic as his ideas sound, they end up on a large-scale assembly line and this time, it’s mass scale extraction of lithium using table salt. Musk has plans of using saline extraction to mine lithium in Nevada and he has already applied a patent for it. This is mind-blowing news and the new Tesla patent could cut Battery costs by 33%.

Although it sounds like a crazy idea and many are now skeptical about it, but in his Tesla presentation on Battery Day in 2020, Elon Musk announced the claim that he had plans to mine lithium in Nevada. He also revealed how he had found a way to use regular table salt to do it. The process would involve using salt to extract lithium from clay deposits. Musk revealed that there is enough lithium in Nevada to electrify the entire US fleet. On that note many feel that Musk is not wrong because there is a lot of lithium on the earth. In fact, there is enough in the USA to power all US electric cars for the future. The only problem is getting it out because it exists in deposits and it can get expensive to extract it out.

Well, lithium-ion batteries are the latest invention discovered just three decades ago. They power several devices including your cell phone. It so happens that lithium batteries are also used to power electric cars and trucks. In 2020, Tesla made a huge breakthrough when it invented a tabless battery for their electric cars that would be extremely cost effective and provide more charge. Now it seems the announcement of mining its own lithium using salt is mega news that won't just reduce the cost of the battery but push up the company’s stock as well.  In fact, with its giga factories in full swing like the gigantic Giga Nevada, Tesla will be mining in their own backyard. Tesla is planning to make his giga factories produce 3 terawatt hours of battery making capacity with Giga Nevada to increase vehicle production and by mining its own lithium, that process just got faster.
