John Humphrey & Jon Maturan cross the finish line with their reaction & review of Pixar’s CARS 3 (2017) — the heartfelt third chapter in the Lightning McQueen saga. When racing legend Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson, Wedding Crashers, Loki) is blindsided by a new generation of high-tech racers led by Jackson Storm, he’s forced to confront the possibility that his time at the top may be over. After a devastating crash sequence that stands as one of Pixar’s most intense openings, Lightning teams up with ambitious trainer Cruz Ramirez (voiced by Cristela Alonzo, Cristela, The Angry Birds Movie) to rediscover what truly makes a champion.
As Lightning struggles with doubt and legacy, CARS 3 leans into themes of mentorship, perseverance, and passing the torch. The training montage at the Rust-eze Racing Center, the demolition derby-inspired Thunder Hollow sequence featuring Miss Fritter (voiced by Lea DeLaria, Orange Is the New Black), and the emotional homage to Doc Hudson (originally voiced by Paul Newman) all build toward a powerful final race at the Florida 500. In a bold and inspiring climax, Lightning makes a selfless decision that redefines victory and allows Cruz to seize her own moment of glory. Supporting performances include Armie Hammer (The Social Network) as Jackson Storm, Larry the Cable Guy (Blue Collar Comedy Tour) as Mater, and Bonnie Hunt (Jumanji, Cheaper by the Dozen) as Sally Carrera. With stunning animation, emotional stakes, and a message about growth and legacy, CARS 3 delivers a surprisingly mature and satisfying sendoff for one of Pixar’s most iconic characters.
