The ancient capital city of Polonnaruwa is a must see while in Sri Lanka. A lot of people compare it against Anuradhapura and having been to both, I can assure you that for most tourists, you'll enjoy Polonnaruwa much more. Take a bicycle there like we did, go on a weekday when it's not crowded, and enjoy the authenticity of the old ruins and ancient city!
