ChatGPT: Friend, Foe, or Opportunity?

SPEAKER: Sue Hellman, Retired – recently on contract with Columbia College, Calgary
DESCRIPTION: Educators have generally reacted to ChatGPT in one of two ways. Many warn that cheaters will prosper because ChatGPT can pass typical tests and generate fake essays that fool most readers. Others urge us to embrace AI and use it to improve our own work/life balance or with students as an “intelligent” tutor.

During this session we'll dig into a third option: how to make assessments less about compilation and explanation and more about thoughtful synthesis and critical thinking. We may not be able to beat ChatGPT at its own game, but we can change the game by designing learning tasks that ChatGPT cannot do.

In this session, you will:
- Discuss what constitutes "understanding" and how to measure it in the era of ChatGPT.
- Explore a collection of templates and strategies you can use to both scaffold the development of synthesis and critical thinking skills and design ChatGPT-proof learning tasks and assessments.
