In this video, Dr Gaurav Gupta who is a surgeon of liver transplant at the Fortis hospital, Mulund talks about liver cirrhosis, its causes, and treatment.

In liver cirrhosis, the liver gets swollen and this causes permanent damage to the liver and fibroid is formed making the liver hard and shrinking it in size. The common causes of liver cirrhosis include consumption of alcohol for many years and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) other causes are Hepatitis B, hepatitis C, Autoimmune, and Hemochromatosis.

In the initial stage of liver cirrhosis, the patient looks fine and does not go through any signs and symptoms. In fact, blood samples also seem normal but liver cirrhosis is diagnosed only when a sonography or CT scan is done. Patients suffering from liver cirrhosis show any symptoms when they enter the advanced stage of liver cirrhosis like fluid retention in the stomach, swollen legs, blood vomiting, stress on the kidney, and hepatic encephalopathy, where the level of ammonia in the body increases and it directly affects the brain. In the further advanced stage, it can also cause liver cancer.

At stage A, liver cirrhosis has no direct treatment. In stage A, the causes of liver cirrhosis are treated, if one develops liver cirrhosis due to alcohol consumption, then that needs to be rectified. When stage A cirrhosis progress to stage B, the patient requires medical treatment like fluid removal from the stomach, endoscopy to control bleeding, albumin for stress on the kidney, etc. but if the patient gets into stage C of liver cirrhosis, all the medicines don’t work and, in this situation, a liver transplant is the only treatment.

लीवर सिरोसिस के प्रारंभिक चरण में रोगी ठीक दिखता है और किसी भी लक्षण और लक्षण से नहीं गुजरता है। वास्तव में, रक्त के नमूने भी सामान्य लगते हैं लेकिन लीवर सिरोसिस का निदान तभी होता है जब सोनोग्राफी या सीटी स्कैन किया जाता है। लीवर सिरोसिस से पीड़ित मरीजों में लीवर सिरोसिस के उन्नत चरण में प्रवेश करने पर कोई भी लक्षण दिखाई देते हैं जैसे पेट में द्रव प्रतिधारण, पैरों में सूजन, खून की उल्टी, गुर्दे पर तनाव और यकृत एन्सेफैलोपैथी, जहां शरीर में अमोनिया का स्तर बढ़ जाता है और यह सीधे मस्तिष्क को प्रभावित करता है। आगे के उन्नत चरण में, यह लीवर कैंसर का कारण भी बन सकता है।

स्टेज ए में लीवर सिरोसिस का कोई सीधा इलाज नहीं है। स्टेज ए में, लीवर सिरोसिस के कारणों का इलाज किया जाता है, यदि किसी को शराब के सेवन से लीवर सिरोसिस हो जाता है, तो उसे ठीक करने की आवश्यकता होती है। जब चरण ए सिरोसिस चरण बी में प्रगति करता है, तो रोगी को पेट से तरल पदार्थ निकालना, रक्तस्राव को नियंत्रित करने के लिए एंडोस्कोपी, गुर्दे पर तनाव के लिए एल्ब्यूमिन आदि जैसे चिकित्सा उपचार की आवश्यकता होती है, लेकिन यदि रोगी लीवर सिरोसिस के चरण सी में हो जाता है, तो सभी दवाएं काम न करें और इस स्थिति में लीवर ट्रांसप्लांट ही एकमात्र इलाज है।
