Heart valve surgery is a medical procedure that involves repairing or replacing one or more of the four valves in the heart. The most common valves that require surgery are the mitral and aortic valves. In some cases, valve problems can be detected through an echo scan and confirmed through angiography if the patient is over 40 years old. There are two types of valves used for replacement, a mechanical or metallic valve, and a tissue valve. The metallic valve is known to last for 25 to 30 years, while tissue valves can last 15 to 20 years. Patients who undergo valve surgery are required to follow a strict diet and avoid heavy lifting for the first two months after surgery. It is also important to monitor the pH levels of warfarin medication and avoid eating green leafy vegetables. The lifespan of tissue valves can vary based on the patient's age, as the rate of calcification reduces with age.
