Who Pays RM6 Diesel? Farmers Do | Malaysia | Maraz TV News

Diesel prices in Peninsular Malaysia have hit a record RM6.02 per litre — up RM2.90 in just four weeks since March — driven by the impact of the Iran war on global fuel markets. For padi farmers, every stage of cultivation runs on diesel, and PeSAWAH — the national padi farmers' association — warns that ploughing and harvesting costs have already jumped 35 to 52 per cent. Factor in fertiliser and pesticides, and the total burden could reach 65 per cent. PeSAWAH is now calling on the government to immediately include the padi sector in the Subsidised Diesel Control Scheme — or create a dedicated mechanism for farmers — warning that operations may be suspended this season if nothing changes.

Harvesting machine operators have already raised their service charges, with one operator hiking his rate from RM50 to RM80 per tonne just to stay afloat. Malaysia is already only 70 percent self-sufficient in rice production. A drop in local padi output — at a time when global food supply chains are already under strain — could push the country further toward import dependence. As PeSAWAH's chairman put it plainly: if there is no profit, it is not worthwhile to continue farming.
