Is it safe to fly during pregnancy?

Patients always ask me, “Is it safe to fly in pregnancy?” And for the most part, yes. The one caveat, however, is the airlines typically don’t want you on their plane after 36 weeks. So if patients are planning on flying, it’s best to do it early in the 1st and 2nd trimesters and have that done by the time you end up in the mid to late 3rd trimester. So again, the guideline, less than 36 weeks.

Also, if patients are flying, it’s nice to look at shorter flights. We worry about clotting risk. Patients are at an increased risk for clotting when we keep them immobilized and sitting for a long time during pregnancy. So if you do end up with a long flight, we encourage patients to get up, move around at least every 2 hours, drink plenty of fluid, and get it done, once again, before 36 weeks.
