Our place in the Universe | Ben Placek | TEDxChemungRiver
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. We are so busy living our lives we sometimes forget to look up with wonder at the enormity of the night sky. Are there planets in other solar systems similar to Earth? Ben Placek takes us on a wild tour to a few interesting places in our universe.
Born and raised in Elmira, New York, Ben Placek is now a physicist working to detect planets outside our own solar system (exoplanets) using data from the Kepler Space Telescope. He began his education at Corning Community College, received his doctorate from SUNY Albany, and is now a physics professor at Schenectady County Community College. Through his involvement with TEDxChemungRiver, he hopes to spark conversation about our place in the universe and stimulate further interest in astronomy and science.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
