The long awaited stock market crash looks like its playing out as many expected. The S&P500 is down 20% so far this year and is now classified as being in a bear market. However investors are worried about how severe this bubble bursting moment could be. Could it be as severe as the dot com bubble we saw in the early 2000’s, or could it be as bad as the Japanese stock market in the late 1980’s which took 3 decades to recover? Let’s discuss.

The Japanese stock market has been a well publicised case study about the worst case scenario for investors. After a period of unconventional monetary policy by the central bank of Japan, a huge increase in the money supply resulted in a mass acceleration of asset prices. It lead to euphoric market conditions across all assets, but when the bubble burst, it didn’t recover quickly. 3 decades later, we’re only just touching on breakeven territory.

Many investors, Warren Buffet included, recently called out how global markets can change quickly, and as such, there may be a risk that investors lose appetite to invest into the US stock market due to extreme economic challenges, resulting in a lost decade of investment returns.
