Don't Leave Home Without This: Advanced Home Assistant Vacation Logic

Away Mode is useful, but Vacation Mode needs to do more. In this video I walk through my Home Assistant Vacation Mode pattern: sustained-away detection, a single source-of-truth helper, house-sitter visit tracking, timed reminders, missed-visit alerts, and secure-house checks after the sitter leaves.

This is not a one-click copy/paste automation. It is a reusable pattern you can adapt with the sensors you already have: presence, door sensors, garage doors, locks, helpers, history_stats, template sensors, notifications, and optional speech output.

Using Codex, Claude, or another AI-enabled Home Assistant workflow? Point it at this video and the GitHub package. The video gives it the intent, the YAML gives it the implementation pattern, and your Home Assistant instance supplies the actual entities.

Key ideas:
- Use one Vacation Mode helper as the source of truth
- Reset automatically when the family returns
- Track sitter arrival and departure without manual buttons
- Send useful reminders only during an active visit
- Check doors, locks, and garage state after departure
- Alert when a visit has not happened in too long
