Life in San Francisco Japantown during 2nd Shelter in Place Order

San Francisco is officially back in Shelter in Place mode due to an increase of COVID-19 cases. What is life like now? What are people doing? What does the city look like? What random encounters will we find?! Let's take a quick stroll in Japantown and see for ourselves!!

Also, if you've never been to San Francisco Japantown, this video can also serve as a quick guide. Although not as big and popular as Chinatown, there are still tons of attractions in Japantown!

The Japanese settled in California shortly after the Chinese arrived, and like the San Francisco Chinatown, Japantown was established as a Japanese community. However, because the US was fighting Japan during WW2, the Japanese living in the US were ordered to move into "relocation camps", forfeiting all their properties and businesses. After the war was over and all the "relocation camps" were closed, the Japanese resettled in other places in the US, like Chicago. For the ones who decided to return to San Francisco, not all returned to Japantown, settling in other parts of the city. Although Japantown is still a Japanese community, it is more of a hangout spot for San Francisco residents with Japanese restaurants, giftshops, and markets.
