Why Black Men Don’t do Therapy
From a mental health standpoint, African Americans as a group are under duress. In fact, African Americans are 20% more likely to have serious psychological distress than whites. In addition, "African Americans are 20% more likely to develop a mental illness during their lifetime than their white counterparts." Black males in particular are faced with a number of mental health challenges on a daily basis. For example:
* Among men aged 18–44 who had daily feelings of anxiety or depression, non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic men made up 26.4%.
* Between the ages of 15 and 24, suicide is the third leading cause of death among African American or black males.
* "African American men ages 20 to 24 have the highest suicide rate among African Americans of all ages, male and female."
But yet despite all of this, African American men were less likely than non-Hispanic White men (45.4 percent) to have used mental health treatments. The reality is black men do not do therapy, and perhaps more than any other group they need to. There are many conclusions based on sound research as to why black don't do therapy. But in this video I want to point out three reasons I believe black men don't do therapy.
