fib Bulletin 96 Guidelines for Submerged Floating Tube Bridges – Chapter 3 by Bjørn Isaksen

Although the SFTB concept has been extensively studied in several major projects around
the world, no SFTB-specific codes have yet been developed. Specific, stand-alone rules for
the SFTB would certainly assist in creating a broader acceptance of the SFTB concept, but the
lack of codified provisions is not necessarily a major drawback for establishing an adequate
basis for design, construction and operation for a specific crossing project. There are several
international standards and codes, both land-based and offshore, that are applicable to the
structural design of SFTBs. Some examples of relevant standards are briefly described below.
All of the standards will require additional provisions to deal with the unique characteristics
of the SFTB, although the extent of individual adaptation will vary since their scope and fields
of application are different.

The fib, Fédération internationale du béton, is a not-for-profit association formed by 41 national member groups in 104 countries and approximately 1000 corporate and individual members. The fib’s mission is to develop at an international level the study of scientific and practical matters capable of advancing the technical, economic, aesthetic and environmental performance of concrete construction.

The knowledge developed and shared by the fib (fib Bulletins, fib events, fib workshops, fib courses, etc.) is entirely the result of the volunteer work provided by the fib members.

The fib was formed in 1998 by the merger of the Euro-International Committee for Concrete (the CEB) and the International Federation for Pre-stressing (the FIP). These predecessor organizations have existed independently since 1953 and 1952, respectively.
